Career

  • Tribunus Militum 198 (Broughton MRR III) Expand
    • The Legatus, Ap. Claudius Nero (Pr. 195), must be distinguished from another Ap. Claudius (Pulcher ?), who served in Greece in 195 and brought the army home (Liv. 34.28.10, and 50.10). Livy's term tribunus militum in 32.35.7 may be simply a translation of {Gr} in Polybius 18.8.6, and Greek terms were not always exact equivalents for Latin ones. The Tribune was probably the same person as the Legatus (cf. Mommsen, Str. 2.695, note 1); otherwise, he was Ap. Claudius Pulcher, Cos. 185. (Broughton MRR I)
    • Attended Flamininus during his conference with Philip at Nicaea (Liv. 32.35.7; Polyb. 18.8.6). (Broughton MRR I)
    • In MRR 1.331, 332, note 4, Ap. Claudius, the tr. mil. who attended Flamininus in his conference with Philip of Macedonia at Nicaea in 198, has been mistakenly confused with Nero, one of the envoys sent by Flamininus to the Senate in that year. He is termed legatus in 194 (Liv. 34.40.10; MRR 1.344), and was probably one during his years of service with Flamininus. See Badian, T. Quinctius Flamininus 44-45, and note 57. ; (Broughton MRR III)
  • Tribunus Militum 196 (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • See 198, note 4. (Broughton MRR I)
    • Served under Flamininus in Greece (Liv. 33.29.9). See 198, note 4. (Broughton MRR I)
  • Legatus (Lieutenant) 195 Macedonia, Achaea (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • Served under Flamininus in Greece (Liv. 34.28.10; termed Legatus in 194, Liv. 34.50.10). See 198.{342} (Broughton MRR I)
  • Legatus (Lieutenant) 194 Macedonia, Achaea (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • Legate under Flaminius in Greece (Liv. 34.40.10).
  • Legatus (Lieutenant) 191 Macedonia, Achaea (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • With Baebius in Macedonia and Thessaly (Liv. 36.10.10-14, and 13.1; App. Syr. 16), and with Acilius Glabrio in Greece (Liv. 36.22.8, and 30.2). (Broughton MRR I)
  • Praetor 188 inter peregrinos, Rome (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • Elections: Liv. 38.35.2 Provinces and armies 38.35.10. (Broughton MRR I)
    • If Livy's text at 38.35.2 (P. Claudius) is correct, the career of P. Claudius affords the only example in this period of the continuation of curule offices (see 184 on Q. Fulvius Flaccus), since he is listed as Curule Aedile in 189. Mommsen (Str. 1.525, note 1), followed by Stella Maranca (306) and Maxis (42f.), suggests that Livy has interchanged his praetorship with that of his brother Ap. Claudius Pulcher, Cos. 185, who is listed as Praetor in 187. The order of their consulships supports Mommsen's view. Accordingly I list Ap. Claudius as Praetor in 188 and P. Claudius as Praetor in 187. (Broughton MRR I)
    • p. 731 (Brennan 2000)
  • Consul 185 (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • Liv. 39.23.2, and 32.15; Fast. Cap., Degrassi 48f., 122, 456f.; Chr. 354; Fast. Hyd.; Chr. Pasc.; Cassiod. After a victory over the Ligurian Ingauni Claudius returned to Rome to assist his brother's candidacy for the consulship, while Sempronius ravaged the territory of the Apuani (Liv. 39.32). The embassy also went to Crete to settle disputes among the Cretan cities (Polyb. 22.15). (Broughton MRR I)
