Career

  • Augur 203 to 196 (Rüpke 2005) Expand
    • Q. Fabius Maximus succeeded Q. Fabius Maximus Verrucosus. Liv. 30.26.7 and 10. On Fabius Maximus, see Elog., CIL 1 .1, p.193- Inscr. Ital. 13.3.80. His successor as Augur was probably his grandson (Münzer, RE). (Broughton MRR I)
    • C. Claudius Pulcher succeeded Q. Fabius Maximus. Liv. 33.42.6. (Broughton MRR I)
    • Augur 203. See MRR 1.314, 203 B.C., and 338, 196 B.C. Sumner, in Arethusa 3, 1970, 96-98, suggests that Livy's mistake in 30.26.10 arose not from accepting the new augur as a son of the Cunctator (he had died before his father) rather than a grandson, but in interpreting Q. Fabius M. f. in the records as Q. Fabius Maximus. Q. Fabius M. f. (57) was a Buteo, son of the consul of 245, M. Fabius Buteo. He was elected praetor for 196 (MRR 1.335), and assigned a command in Hisp. Ult. of which there is no further notice. 1n fact, M. Helvius was continued in Hisp. Ult. into 195, detained according to Livy by illness (MRR 1.336, cf. 343), while the augur, called Q. Fabius Maximus by Livy (33.42.6) but really Q. Fabius Buteo in Sumner's reconstruction, died while still young before he could attain a magistracy. Sumner sees in Helvius' prolonged command in Spain less the result of his illness (note his victories and his ovatio in 185) than of the death of his intended successor. He finds a grandson of the Cunctator in Q. Fabius Maximus (105), praetor in 181. See above on Q. Fabius Buteo (57) (Broughton MRR III)
