Career

  • Legatus (Lieutenant)? 191 Hispania Ulterior (Broughton MRR I) Expand

  • Legatus (Lieutenant)? 182 Liguria (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • Probably Legates of Paullus throughout his command in Liguria (Liv. 40.28.8; see 181, Legates; and Münzer, RE no. 66). (Broughton MRR I)

    • A commission, apparently of former officials in Spain, chosen as patrons by peoples of Spain who complained of the peculations of the following governors: 1. M. Titinius (Curvus) (see 178, 177, 176), who was acquitted; 2. P. Furius Philus (see 174, 173, 172); and 3. C. (not M.) Matienus (see 173), who both went into exile (Liv. 43.2.1-11). On Cato, see D.- G. 5.130, no. 15. (Broughton MRR I)
    • Cos. 166. The connection with Spain implied in his appointment in 171 to the commission on misgovernment there (Liv. 43.2.5, 7; MRR 1.419) may well have been made after 191, the date suggested by Münzer; cf. MRR 1.355. See Sumner, Orators 37-38, who also suggests that he was, like his fellow envoy, L. Aurelius Cotta, a military tribune under Aemilius Paullus in Liguria in 182-181 (Liv. 42.27.6, and 28.8) and would change the praenomen L. in that passage to C. It would be the only example of L. among the patrician Sulpicii. (Broughton MRR III)
