SCRI1876 C. Scribonius (10) C. f. Curio 'Burbuleius'

A fragment of an inscription of Thasos containing a letter of Sulla and a copy of an SC yields among the witnesses the name of the consul of 76 (Dunant and Pouilloux, Etudes Thas. 5.2.37-45, no. 174) with part of the name of the tribe ( ...#, with a vertical stroke barely visible before the e). From this and a review of the manuscript tradition for the senatorial decrees in Cic. Fam. 8.8.5-6, with the name of his son, Curio (11), Tr. pl. 50 (Pop. in the first SC, Porn. in the second), Badian has shown that the tribe was the Pomptina (Athenaeum 40, 1962, 356-359). See L. R. Caesar is the correct reading of the name in line 22 of the Lex Gabinia Calpurnia de Delo (see above, Iulius, no. 143, Cos. 64), the only other suitable ex-consul whose name can be presented in the small remaining space (and only as C. Curio even then) is the consul of 76 (C. Nicolet et al., Insula Sacra, esp. 122-125). This is supported by Cic. 0,f: 2.17; the joke in Att. 1.16.3; and Val. Max. 2.7.5; 2.9.pr; 9.1.7.
