Career

  • Tribunus Plebis 89 (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • 4 Münzer (RE) distinguished three L. Memmii active in political life in this period. As the one named above, who was father-in-law of C. Seribonius Curio, was liable to prosecution in 90 (Cic. Brut. 304), his tribunate should be dated in 89 (Niccolini, FTP 223). (Broughton MRR II)
    • Sisenna fr. 44 Peter; Cic. Brut. 304. (Broughton MRR II)
    • p. 257-63 (Thommen 1989)
    • Tr. Pl. 89? See MRR 2.34, 38, note 4. The title Tribune of the Plebs depends on the reading of the text of fr. 44P2 of Sisenna's Histories, and being from Book III refers to 90 in any case, not to 89. The text runs as follows: Lucium Memmium socerum Gai Scriboni, tribunum plebis quem Marci Livi consiliarium fuisse callebant et tunc Curionis oratorem. It seems strange for Memmius to be tribune in the same year with his son-in-law, the future consul of 76. As long ago as 1834, C. L. Roth suggested reading tribuni plebis, now accepted by Frassinetti, Athenaeum 50, 1972, 78-118, esp. 90. Sumner independently suggests too that the original text had the abbreviation tr. Pl. and that this title referred to Scribonius (Orators 89-90; cf. Wiseman, CQ 17, 1967, 164-167). He may be identified with the monetalis L. Memmius (13), above; in all probability too young to be the distinguished senator who visited Egypt in 112 (RE no. 12; MRR 1.539). The word consiliarium evinces continued activity, but there is no evidence of magistracies. (Broughton MRR III)
