12 Cichorius believes that M. Cotta, Cos. 74, was already too advanced in his career for this position on the list, and suggests Scaurus, who was Quaestor under Valerius Flaccus in Asia (see 86, Quaestors). (Broughton MRR II)
He is no. 13 on the list of the consilium of Pompeius Strabo at Asculum in 89 (ILS 8888; Cichorius, RS 144-155; Criniti, L'Epigrafe di Asculum 111-112; cf. MRR 2.35, 38, note 12, 536). He is listed in MRR with the cognomen Scaurus, as also in Cichorius (RS 140), but Cotta is not impossible, as he might be the future consul of 74 (L. R. Taylor, VDRR 197; see now Badian, Klio 66, 1984, 300).[32]
(Broughton MRR III)
Cichorius identifies him as a Tribune of the Soldiers based on the list of members of the staff of Pompeius Strabo at Asculum (ILS 8888; RS 144-155). (Broughton MRR II)
