Career

    • Quaestor before he prosecuted Fonteius in 69 (Cic. Font. 1). (Broughton MRR II)
    • See MRR 2.601, and the years cited there for his career. His coinage as monetalis (with no mention of being quaestor or aedile) is dated to 69 by Crawford (RRC 1.414-418, no. 405). His quaestorship must precede that date, as there is no room for it before his later offices (not attested in Cic. Font. 1 and 3). Crawford (RRC 1.436-437, no. 409) dates his coinage as curule aedile to 67 (see Syme, CPh 50, 1955, 132). See also Wiseman, NM 251, no. 320; Shackleton Bailey, CLA 3.320, on Att. 5.20.8. There appears to be no foundation for H. B. Mattingly's attribution of some of the coinage to his quaestorship, in which he has him give the Ludi Victoriae Sullanae at Praeneste (NC 16, 1950, 197f.), while Alföldi's dating of his coinage to 62 on stylistic grounds runs counter to attested facts of his career. It is uncertain if the M. Plaetorius of Cic. Fam. 1.8.1 was a Cestianus, and there is no evidence that he held an official position under Lentulus in Cilicia in 56- 54 (see MRR 2.219, and Shackleton Bailey, CLF 1.306). (Broughton MRR III)

The present date is a conjecture from that of his service as Iudex Quaestionis in 66 (see Mommsen, Strafrecht 648, note 3), and from the place where there is room for him in the Fasti of Macedonia.
