    • His agrarian law, intended to provide land for Pompey's veterans from public land and from purchases of land with the new revenues, was supported by Cicero with amendments designed to protect present possessors, but was so sternly opposed by the conservatives, including the Consul, Metellus Celer, that it failed of passage (Cic.
