CANI2486 C. Caninius (9) C. f. C. n. Ter. Rebilus

Career

  • Quaestor before 52 (Broughton MRR III) Expand
    • Cos. suff. 45. A legatus in 52 (MRR 2.238), Caninius can be assumed to be a senator and ex-quaestor (Sumner, Phoenix 25, 1971, 151). His praetorship in 48 remains uncertain (2.273), despite his proconsulate in 46, and consulate (suffect) in 45, since under Caesar examples occur of proconsuls and even consuls who have not been praetors (Sumner, op. cit., 251-254, 269, and Badian, Phoenix 25, 1971, 138-142). In MRR 2.297, on his proconsulate, add and received the surrender of both C. Vergilius (MRR 2.303) and the town. He may be the senator Rebilus, a supporter of Octavian who was captured and released by Sextus Pompey (App. BC 5.101, and Viereck's note). He should be distinguished from the C. Caninius Re[bil]us who founded Cephaloedium in Sicily (2.376), who may be RE no. 6. (TJC) (Broughton MRR III)

    • Legate of Caesar in Gaul (Caes. BG 7.83.3, and 90.6). (Broughton MRR II)

  • Praetor? before 47 (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • Perhaps Praetor in this year, since he was a Proconsul in 46 and a Consul Suffectus in 45, but as Caesar was not bound by constitutional niceties (see Dio 42.20), the date may be 47 or even 46. (Broughton MRR II)
