IULI0255 Cn. (or C.) Iulius (360) Mento

Status

  • Patrician

Career

  • Consul 431 (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • In Diod. Iulius has the praenomen Gaius, but in Livy Gnaeus which is not found elsewhere in the Iulian gens. (Broughton MRR I)
    • Liv. 4.26.1; Diod. 12.65.1; Chr. 354 (Cincinnato et Mento); Fast. Hyd. (Poeno et Melitono), so also Chr. Pasc.; Cassiod.; Degrassi 95, 372f. Quinctius served in command of one army, under the Dictator, against the Aequi and Volsci (Liv. 4.27-29, and 41.11), while Iulius protected the city and dedicated a temple of Apollo (Liv. 4.27.1, and 29.7). On Quinctius, see Lübker no. 4. (Broughton MRR I)
    • Cos. 431. Diodorus (12.65.1) reports the praenomen as Gaius. The note in MRR 1.64 mistakenly states that the praenomen Gnaeus does not occur in the Iulian gens. Note the quaestor of 47, Cn. Iulius L. f., and see MRR 2.287, and the stemma in Sumner, Phoenix 25, 1971, 264. The use of the praenomen Gnaeus in the Iulian gens remains doubtful. (Broughton MRR III)
