Career

  • Officer (Title Not Preserved) 89 (Taylor 1960) Expand
    • Consilium of 89. CIL 6.37045. ILS 8888. (Taylor 1960)
  • Praetor before 47 (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • See 47, Promagistrates. (Broughton MRR II)
  • Proconsul 47 Cilicia (Broughton MRR III) Expand
    • Proconsul in Cilicia (Cic. Fam. 13.73, and 74; see Syme, Anat. Stud. Buckler 299-332, esp. 306-324, on the date and identification of this governor and his province; and Magie, Roman Rule in Asia Minor 2.1270, note 40). (Broughton MRR II)
    • Procos. in Cilicia, 47-46. See MRR 2.273 and 289; and Syme, Anat. Stud. Buckler 299-332, esp. 306-308, . 317-318-RP 1.120-148, esp. 126-128, 135-136. Syme identifies him as a brother or nephew of the consul of 56, thus rejecting Cichorius' identification with the youthful member of the consilium of Pompeius Strabo at Asculum (RS 168-169), and would explain Cicero's phrase pro vetere nostra consuetudine (Fam. 13.73) as a reference to an inherited relationship. As it was not necessary under Caesar to hold a praetorship before receiving a proconsular command, Sumner would reject the praetorship listed in MRR (above) (Phoenix 25, 1971, 252-254), and along with Badian (ibid. 142-144) rejects the earlier Marcius because of the long interval. Instead, he opts for a younger brother of L. Marcius Philippus (RE no. 77, cf. 74), the future consul of 38, while Badian also suggests that he may be a son of the member of the consilium. See also Criniti, L'Epigrafe di Asculum 146-148; and Shackleton Bailey, CLF 2.437-439. (Broughton MRR III)
