Career

  • Praetor? 47 (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • See 46, Promagistrates. Probably a praetorius in 46, certainly so before the time of the S. C. de Panamareis (Viereck 41, no. 20). (Broughton MRR II)
    • Cos. Suff. 36, Procos. Africa 46. As Sumner has shown (Phoenix 25, 1971, 260), his command in Africa under Caesar in 46 (MRR 2.298) is no proof that he was praetor in 47; so, too, Badian (Phoenix 25, 1971, 138-141), who uses ILS 884 (ILLRP 432) from Valentia, ... ([L. Non]io L. fil. | [asp]renati pro p[r(aetore | ), to suggest that he had command also in Gallia Transalpina, perhaps in 49, before Decimus Brutus. (RS, CP; TJC) His father was perhaps L. Nonius T. f. Vel., a member of the consilium of Pompeius Strabo in 89 (Cichorius, RS 170; Criniti, L'Epigrafe di Asculum 153-155). His position as third in the lists of senators, both in the SC de Aphrodisiensibus of 39 (J. M. Reynolds, Aphrodisias and Rome 57, 61), and the SC de Panamareis of the same year (Sherk, RDGE 170171, no. 29), show that he was then a senior ex- praetor. (Broughton MRR III)
  • Proconsul 46 Africa (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • With Caesar in Africa pro consule, where he received the command of the town of Thapsus (Bell. Afr. 80.4). (Broughton MRR II)
  • Praefectus 45 (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • Served as a commander of cavalry under Caesar in Spain, perhaps a Legate (Bell. Hisp. 10.2). See 46, Promagistrates. (Broughton MRR II)
  • Consul Suffectus 36 (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • Fast. Cap., Degrassi 58f. Q-] L. [-]), 135f., 5081.; Fast. Mag. Vic., ibid. 282, 288 (L. Nonius; Marcius); Fast. Biond., ibid. 291f. QL. No]ni[us]). On the filiation of Nonius, see Cichorius, RS 170. (Broughton MRR II)
  • Septemvir Epulonum? c. 31 (Broughton MRR II) Expand
    • A probable member of this college of priests about 31 B. C. In a number of instances the exact date when a priest became a member of his college is not known, and the conjecture is based on evidence of seniority such as the date of the consulship or some other office. The list of the Quindecimviri is based on Miss Hoffman's observation that the names listed in connection with the Saecular Games in 17 B. C. are arranged in the order of entrance into the college (see AJPh 73 [19521289-294). The names given below are drawn from Miss Hoffman's dissertation, The Membership of the Four Major Colleges of Priests from 44 B. C. to 37 A. D. (Bryn Mawr, 1951, available in microfilm). (Broughton MRR II)
    • Perhaps a Septemvir (see CIL 2156, which may refer to the Consul of 36 or to his son; cf. Plin. NH 35.164; Suet. Aug. 56). See De Laet no. 258; and RE no. 15 on his son. (Broughton MRR II)
