    • Quaestor in Cyprus (Cic. Fam. 13.48). The date is uncertain but must be after Cicero's proconsulate in Cilicia (51-50) and before Caesar returned the island to a Ptolemaic ruler in 47 (Dio 42.35.5). (TJC) His office was wrongly dated to 47 in MRR 2.287, and to 48 or 47 by A. J. Marshall (Phoenix 19, 1964, 206-215), since the fiscal organization which Caesar introduced affected, so far as we know, only Asia at that time, and for 47 there were elections only of plebeian magistrates before Caesar's return to Italy in the autumn. As Badian points out (JRS 55, 1965, 113-115), probabilities favor Sextilius' election in 50 for 49, and either his mandate was to be a special quaestor to Cyprus, or else the governor of Cilicia, who would in this case be P. Sestius, was now required to send his quaestor to the island. See also Sumner, Phoenix 25, 1971, 263; and Wiseman, CQ 14, 1964, 130. (Broughton MRR III)
