Career

  • Praetor before 42 (Broughton MRR III) Expand
    • Munzer identifies him with L. Iulius Mocilla (above), and with the [GREEK] who was condemned by Brutus at Sardis in 42 (Plut. Brut. 35). (Broughton MRR II Appendix 2)
    • Delete the number 26 in MRR 2.464, and in the Index, 582. Identified by Cichorius (RS 253-257) with L. Cella (Bell. Afr. 89.1; MRR 2.476), L. Pella, the praetorius (Plut. Brut. 35, 42 B.C.), and L. Iulius Mocilla (Iulius 362; MRR 2.464), also a praetorius. Atticus aided him after Philippi (Nep. Att. 11.2). See Shackleton Bailey, CLA 4.415, on Att. 10.10.4. If he was L. Pella, a praetorius, he should be distinguished from Livius Ocella (26), quaestor in Spain. (Broughton MRR III)
    • Hinard considers the L. Livii Ocellae as identical to the L. Cellae, a father and son in Africa in 46 spared when captured by Caesar (Cae. Bell. Afr. 89), the L. Iulii Mocillae, a praetorius and his son who after Philippi who were aided by Atticus (Nep. Att. 11.2), and the father as being L. Pella, a praetorius who in 42 was dismissed by Brutus from his service for having embezzled provincials (Plut. Brut. 35). Note also L. Livius Ocella, quaestor in Spain ca. 40, who is identified as the son (CIL 6.1446) (Hinard 1985)
