COEL3127 C. Coelius (13) C. f. C. n. Caldus
From RRC I 457-468 no. 437 2a-4b (dated by Crawford to 51 BC, with legend IMP A X), it has been thought that there existed a son of the cos. 94 C. Coelius Caldus who was hailed as "imperator" (i.e. from a praetorian command in an armed provincia) and also reached the positions of Xvir s.f. (before 80) and augur (before 61): see MRR II 285, III 60, with G. Radke in RE s.v. quindecemviri col. 1142 on the college of Xviri s.f. (raied to 15 probably by Sulla). Yet it seems hard to believe that an otherwise unknown individual simultaneously might hold two major Roman priesthoods, always a rare distinction in the Republic (cf. E. Badian, Arethusa 1 (1968) 39f.). Furthermore it strains credulity to think that this simple X xan stand for "Xvir s. f." when this same coi issue shows also the legends IIIVIR and VIIVIR EPUL(onum). In sum the interpretation of this legend seems too uncertain to postulate the existence of a son of the cos. 94 who was a praetorian imperator. (See now E. Badian, Arctos 32 [1998] 45-60, rejecting this conjectural praetorian altogether.) Rather than delete this individual, we have therefore marked all offices as uncertain and given nominal dates of after 80 to the praetorship and promagistracy. (Brennan 2000)
