AURE3334 L. Aurelius (not in RE) Cotta or Orestes?

Career

  • Praetor Pro Consule? c. 100 Macedonia (Broughton MRR III) Expand
    • Named as a proconsul or praetor pro consule in a decree of Rhodes found at Thasos (Chr. Dunant and J. Pouilloux, Etudes Thas. V, 2.26-35, no. 172). This governor of Macedonia is not named elsewhere nor is it certain whether his cognomen was Cotta or Orestes. The authors, noting that the lettering is in favor of a date in the late second or the early first century, review the known Aurelii but in the absence of a cognomen come to no certain conclusion. See also F. Papazoglou, ANRW 2.7.1, 1980, 310; Badian, Gnomon 33, 1961, 493. Note, however, that L. Aurelius Cotta (102), Pr. 70, was available for a province in 69, and that there is a vacancy between 71 and 68 in the list of Macedonian governors, a vacancy for which H. B. Mattingly suggests the name of L. Iulius Caesar (143). Cos. 64, Pr. by or before 67 (Chiron 9, 1979, 147-168), in connection with the problem of dating the Aesillas coins. (Broughton MRR III)
