Honored as legatus pro praetore and tribunus plebis designatus in an inscription of Demetrias of Thessaly on a monument which was replaced by one to Julius Caesar (A. E. Raubitschek, JRS 44, 1954, 66 [I], and note 6). T. A. Arvanitopoulos, Polemon 1, 1929, 204 (also Arch. Eph. 1916, 151; Arch. Delt. 10, 1926, 51; Arch. Eph. 1929, 142); Groag, Råm. Reichsbeamten von Achaia 102, no. 441; S. Accame, Dominio 227, no. 3; Raubitschek, loc. cit.; Syme, CPh 50, 1955, 133, all identify him with C. Caelius (Coelius?) Caldus who was tr. pl. in 51 (Cic. Fam. 8.8.6-8; RE no. 7; MRR 2.241). Shackleton Bailey, who reads C. Coelius in CLF, points out that the tr. pl. of 51 acted in Caesar's favor, while Rufus was removed in order to honor Caesar, and was probably a Pompeian, and another person. If so, his dates as legatus and as tribune are uncertain but must precede Caesar's victory in 48.
