Praetor. Proconsul in Macedonia (ca. 143?), who built and named the Via Egnatia (C. Romiopoulou, BCH 98, 1974, 813-866; AEpig. 1976, no. 643, a bilingual inscription near Thessalonica; cf. 1973, no. 492; cf. P. Collart, BCH 100, 1976, 177-200, esp. 182-183; F. Papazoglou, ANRW 2.7.1, 1979, 310). For a Cn. Egnatius C. f who might be the same man, see Sherk, RDGE 34, no. 4, but note the date, 175-160 B.C. However, H. B. Mattingly's convincing dating of this inscription to the late 140s makes the identification practically certain (NC 1969, 103-104; cf. Crawford, RRC 1.239-241, no. 189). See now F. W. Walbank, The Original Extent of the Via Egnatia, LCM 2, 1977, 73-74.
