OCTA3757 T. Octavius (not in RE)

Career

  • Proconsul 32 Asia? (Broughton MRR III) Expand
    • Procos. Asia? 32-31. Grant (FITA 373, and 3951.) reads # on a unique coin of Alabanda in Berlin with a portrait of Cleopatra (Imhoof-Blummer thought it was Livia), and would identify T. Octavius as a relative of M. Octavius (34), the naval commander at the battle of Actium (MRR 2.442), and suggests that he was proconsul of Asia in 32-31. As in the case of Asinius, no title is preserved (2.411). Grant notes that the custom of dating local magistrates in Greek cities arose somewhat later. The praenomen T. is rare in the Octavian gens, and both the identification of the figures on the coin and the reading remain unconfirmed. Perhaps he was a local magistrate of Alabanda with the name T. Octavius Cleomenes or Cleandros. (Broughton MRR III)
