LUCI3812 L. (Lucilius)? (not in RE) L. f. Ouf. Balbus

Career

  • Praetor? before 39 (Broughton MRR III) Expand
    • A senator, probably of praetorian rank, since he is named fifth in the list of witnesses in the SC de Aphrodisiensibus (J. M. Reynolds, Aphrodisias and Rome, Document 8, and figure 5, pp. 57 and 68-69; cf. Sherk, RDGE no. 29, now superseded by the new discoveries and rearrangement of the inscribed stones). As Syme noted previously when the praenomen was unknown (CPh 50, 1955, 133; Historia 4, 1955, 56-57-RP 2.275-276), several nomina may be considered, such as Lucilius, above, Octavius, Paccius, and even in spite of the difference in the cognomen, L. Saenius Balbinus, Cos. suff. in 30. But Saenius is less probable since it is short for the available space (Reynolds, op. cit. 69). (Broughton MRR III)
