FULV0595 P. Fulvius (78) Longus

Career

  • Triumvir Coloniis Deducendis 313 (Broughton MRR I) Expand
    • Founded a Latin colony at Saticula (Fest. 458 L; cf. Liv. 27.10.7; Vell. 1.14.4). (Broughton MRR I)
    • IIIvir col. deduc. 313. See MRR 1.159. R. D. Weigel in a paper entitled Roman Colonial Commissioners and Prior Service (presented at the Annual Meeting of the Am. Philol. Assoc., December 1982) notes (1) that there is only one other Publius and no other Longus recorded in the Fulvian gens, and (2) that the Romans tended to select persons with prior experience in the region to serve on colonial commissions. He suggests, in place of the above, L. Fulvius Curvus (46), cos. 322, who had won a triumph over the Samnites, and had besieged Saticula in 316 (MRR 1.149-150, and 157). The commission, however, as reported in Festus (458L) conforms to the regular pattern of two seniors and one younger member. (Broughton MRR III)
