    • Münzer (RE on both Caecilius and Curius) favors the view that Metellus fell while Consul and was succeeded by Curius, while the attribution of this{189} command to his praetorship was a fiction of the later annalists. In this he followed Mommsen's analysis in RF 2.367ff., which the latter afterwards withdrew in Str. 2.195, note 1. Polybius calls Caecilius {Gr}, and the other sources call him Praetor; and, as the case of Claudius in 295 reveals, Praetors could see service outside the city. The fragment of Fast. Cap. preserved for these years shows that there was no room for a Consul Suffectus in them. The chief difficulties arise from the fact that Polybius speaks of Boii rather than Senones in Etruria, and places the colony of Sena, which Liv. Per. 11 appears to date about 290, at this time. Livy however, may have gathered into one notice foundations with which Curius Dentatus was connected at different times. It is probable that Caecilius was Praetor after his consulship, and the appointment of Curius is equally possible. See Maxis, Praet. 14; Degrassi 112, on 284. For another view, see E. T.
