Aemilius received command against the Samnites, then invaded Tarentine territory and offered to negotiate, but was refused through the influence of the democratic faction which summoned Pyrrhus of Epirus (App. Samn. 7.3; Oros. 4.1.4; Zon. 8.2; cf.
